Becky Duke is a London-based singer-songwriter. A former
nurse, she found the confidence to follow her dreams to pursue a musical
career after the birth of her daughter in 1996. Initially, she gained
experience by performing jazz standards and cover versions of her favourite
artists who include Carol King, Joan Armatrading, Fleetwood Mac and Beth
Orton.
She started writing her own material and formed a band to
record demos of three songs. The start of 2000 saw her begin to build
a following by playing on the London Acoustic circuit at venues such as
Ronnie Scott’s and The 12 Bar Club. That summer she also completed
a highly successful run at The Edinburgh Festival before returning to
the studio to complete the recording of her debut album “Like it
Like This?” which was released in May 2001 on her own label, Pixel
Records. The album features a guest appearance from the legendary double
bass player Danny Thompson, who over the years has played with everyone
from John Martyn and Nick Drake to Gomez. A donation of £1 for every
copy of the album sold goes to Mind, the mental health charity.
With a distribution deal in place, she spent the summer
touring the UK to promote the album and played support for artists such
as Glen Tilbrook, Fairport Convention and Nick Harper.
Selected by the lifestyle catalogue Model’s Own,
four tracks from the album and a profile of Becky were featured on a special
sampler CD in the latest issue.
“If You Fall” was released as a single
earlier this year and received airplay on Radio 2’s Bob Harris Show.
Becky is now looking at ways of promoting the existing album whilst writing
new material for a follow up album.
